Sonny Bono starb 1998 an den Folgen eines Skiunfalls. Seine Witwe Mary nahm seinen Platz im Kongress ein und übte das Mandat bis 2013 aus. Bono wurde in Cathedral City bestattet, wo wenig später auch Frank Sinatra seine letzte Ruhe fand. Dort hielt auch Cher eine Trauerrede. Auf seinem Grabstein ist zu lesen: „AND THE BEAT GOES ON“.

1970 bekamen Sonny and Cher ihre eigene Show in Las Vegas, Sonny and Cher Nitty Gritty Hour, die dann ein Jahr später als Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour zu einer Fernsehshow wurde. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit avancierte die Show zum Erfolg und brachte den beiden 125.000 US-Dollar pro Woche.
