The Sound was written in a writers camp at Maderas Village, Nicaragua, likely in August 2016, with songwriters Tommy English and Noah Breakfast of production duo English Breakfast. Jepsen met the pair for the first time whilst at Nicaragua, and questioned what kind of song they'd make together.
She explained, 'Noah is known for doing hip-hop beats and really kinda cool, dark things, and Tommy's been known for doing these anthems that are very indie-leaning, and then I come in there and the three of us all looked at each other like 'what we will make together?' 'It was fun to leave [Nicaragua] at the end of it when we were listening to the final mix, we were still like 'but what is it?' We hadn't really heard anything quite like it and we were really proud of that I think.'
Lyrically, The Sound is a song about a failing relationship - Carly doubts her partner's supposed love for her and describes how she needs to hear more than just the words to feel wanted in the relationship.
