The band had its origins in 1958, as the backing musicians for north London vocalist Stan Saxon. Dave Clark played drums and contributed background vocals, alongside a frequently changing line-up. Clark and guitarist Rick Huxley both participated in the 1958 line-up.

Dave Clark Five, The. Originally a backing group for north London singer Stan Saxon, the Five originally comprised Dave Clark on drums and vocals, backed by various musicians, including bassist Chris Wells and guitarist Mick Ryan. After splitting from Saxon, the Five established their own identity.
The Dave Clark Five Featuring Stan Saxon members included: Stan Saxon singing vocals, Mick Ryan on guitar, Chris Walls on bass, and later Rick Huxley on guitar. In 1961, Saxon, Ryan and Walls left and their name was shortened to The Dave Clark Five.
After the ad brought in rhythm guitarist Rick Huxley, Stan Saxon as singer and saxophonist, and Mike Ryan on lead guitar, the "Dave Clark Five featuring Stan Saxon" was born. By 1961, Walls and Ryan had left the group and Huxley had moved to cover bass guitar. Denis Payton joined the band as a saxophonist.
