14. Juni 2011 · Steve Cropper became a solidbody guitar guy years ago after a particularly hot gig with Booker T. & the MGs. “Hot,” as in blazing sun at the Atlanta Pop Festival. Cropper played a Gibson ES-335, a model he’d worked with off and on since his days with the Mar-Keys. “It was the cherry red stereo model,” he remembers.
Booker T. Jones und Steve Cropper entwickelten hierfür sukzessive ein Riff, an das sie sich erinnerten. Innerhalb von 30 Minuten wurde es verfeinert und für die anderen Instrumente arrangiert. Nach zwei Takes war ein Instrumentalstück komplettiert, das heute als Green Onions bekannt ist.
