After Benjamin quit in 1976, Mott briefly replaced him with Steve Hyams, before joining forces with John Fiddler (formerly of Medicine Head), and became British Lions, recording two albums, British Lions (1977) and Trouble With Women (posthumously released on Cherry Red Records 1980) before finally splitting up without any chart success.

Nach zwei Alben in dieser Besetzung und einem weiteren mit Steve Hyams wurde aus Mott 1977, nachdem Benjamin gegangen war, zusammen mit John Fiddler (Ex-Medicine-Head) die Rockband The British Lions. Ian Hunter und Mick Ralphs spielten später gelegentlich zusammen. 2009 und 2013 gab es Reunionkonzerte fast in Originalbesetzung.
Mit Steve Hyams traten sie auch wieder auf, jedoch ohne großen Erfolg. Die Demoaufnahmen wurden erst 1993 unter dem Namen Mott the Hoople Featuring Steve Hyams veröffentlicht. Hyams bekam einen eigenen Plattenvertrag, und im Sommer 1977 stand die Band wieder ohne Frontmann da.
