In the 2022–23 school year, the school will support grades 8–12. Beginning in the 2023–24 school year, Sumner High School will exclusively be a secondary school (grades 9–12). April 19, 1988. Sumner High School is a St. Louis public high school that was the first high school for African-American students west of the Mississippi River in the United States. Together with Vashon High School, Sumner was one of only two public high schools in St. Louis City for African-American students and was segregated.
10. März 2021 · St. Louis Public Radio reports on how Sumner High School, the first Black high school west of the Mississippi River, will stay open with a new focus on arts and activism. The school board voted to support a plan by alumni and arts groups to improve enrollment and revive the Ville neighborhood.
