Sylvia Beach, geboren 1887 in Baltimore, gestorben 1962 in Paris, gründete 1919 die Buchhandlung »Shakespeare and Company« in Paris, die sie schließen musste, als die Deutschen 1941 Paris besetzten. Sylvia Beach wurde berühmt durch ihren verlegerischen Wagemut, 1922 die erste Ausgabe von James Joyce‘ Ulysses zu veröffentlichen.
