His CBC Television special Talking To Americans remains the highest rated Canadian comedy special ever with 2.7 million viewers.
One of Mercer's comedy routines on 22 Minutes was Talking to Americans, in which he would travel to a major American city or institution and conduct on-the-street interviews with Americans on topics such as Canadian politics and weather, using the subject's ignorance about Canada for comedic effect.
Visit at least one different US city every day for three weeks and simply approach so meone at random, catch their eye and start a conversation. One thing overwhelmed both: people’s openness, their readiness to share the private details of their lives with two foreign tourists. To be photographed as they go about their day.
