Nelson left the university and with LoGerfo eventually launched Promise of the Real with band members Tato Melgar and bassist Merlyn Kelly. The band's name was inspired by the lyric "Some get stoned, some get strange, but sooner or later it all gets real" from the Neil Young song Walk On.
