The Astronomers: With Heather Couper, Vera C. Rubin, Tony Tyson, John Lowry Dobson. A look at the work and worlds of leading scientists and astronomers who are helping to unlock the mysteries of the universe.
The Astronomer must have appealed to his nationalistic ambitions since he was convinced that, as well as The Geographer, it celebrated early "Germanic" scientific achievements. The painting was confiscated, along with more than 5,000 other artworks, from Jewish financier Edouard de Rothschild, whose family had owned it for half a century.

This was not always the case.

9. Jan. 2023 · Aryabhata (476-550, Indian) The first of the major mathematician-astronomers from the Indian classical age. One of the first astronomers to theorize that the earth was round. He also believed that it rotated on its own axis and this was the reason for night and day. Correctly believed the moon was illuminated by the sun.
These were Vermeer's only two paintings—at least the only two to survive—with solitary male figures as their protagonists; today the pictures are called The Astronomer and The Geographer, though the titles have varied in the past. In 1713 they were auctioned as "A work depicting a Mathematical Artist, by Vander Meer" and "A ditto by the same."
