International bekannt wurde er 1991 mit dem Hit Walking in Memphis seines Debütalbums Marc Cohn. Im selben Jahr erhielt er den Grammy als Best New Artist. Außerdem wurde ihm in Dortmund für Walking in Memphis der Löwe von Radio Luxemburg in Bronze verliehen. 1993 veröffentlichte er das Nachfolgealbum The Rainy Season.

On this album are remakes of some of his best songs. The Austin Sessions include other artists helping out, Jackson Browne, Steve Earle, Matraca Berg, Vince Gill, Marc Cohn, Alison Krauss, Catie Curtis, and Mark Knopfler. I do like the original tunes on the earlier studio albums better though.
