One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess -- done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd -- as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess -- but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes ...
This is the only known recording from this production, and the first live recording of Porgy and Bess ever released. Porgy and Bess (RCA Red Seal/Sony Music), a live 2009 recording from the styriarte festival in Graz, Austria, with a cast led by bass Jonathan Lemalu, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Porgy and Bess ist eine 1935 uraufgeführte Oper in drei Akten von George Gershwin auf ein Libretto von DuBose Heyward. Die Liedtexte stammen von DuBose Heyward und Gershwins Bruder Ira.
