The Kallikak Family: A Study in the Heredity of Feeble-Mindedness was a 1912 book by the American psychologist and eugenicist Henry H. Goddard, dedicated to his patron Samuel Simeon Fels. [1] .
J.T. Kallikak inherits a gas station in Nowhere, California and moves his family from Appalachia. Wife Venus, teenage Bonnie Lou, and Jr are joined by dimwitted employee Oscar. J.T. tries to get rich by scams and not paying taxes.

In The Kallikak Family, Goddard explores ideas central to eugenics, including how people can increase good traits and reduce bad traits in the population.
The Kallikak Family. ( back to outline) Although Goddard and his assistants studied more than 300 families, the Kallikak family remains the most famous. The name “Kallikak” is actually a pseudonym created by Goddard from the Greek words Kallos (beauty) and Kakos (bad).
The studies are part of a series of other family studies, including the Kallikaks, the Zeros and the Nams, that were often quoted as arguments in support of eugenics, though the original Jukes study, by Richard L. Dugdale, placed considerable emphasis on the environment as a determining factor in criminality, disease and poverty .
