The Rats were an English rock band, first established in 1963, from Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. In 1966, Mick Ronson joined The Rats, then including singer Benny Marshall, bassist Geoff Appleby and drummer Jim Simpson (who was subsequently replaced by Clive Taylor and then John Cambridge).
The novel opens by introducing an alcoholic vagrant, resting by a canal. He is suddenly set upon by a pack of black rats the size of small dogs, and devoured alive. 1. Jan. 1974 · The Rats by James Herbert is a gore fest of a creature feature. Written in 1974, it appears dated at times. But it’s old age doesn’t take away any of the horror, because the rats are something else. They are the stars of this show. The author builds up the horror by adding tons of suspense.

8. Mai 2014 · 'The Rats' is actually quite layered. I simply read for the gore and horror 30 years ago. Now, I've re-read it I can appreciate the social commentary and the characterisation which I probably skimmed as a teenager. Definitely whets the appetite for 'Lair' which is the second Rats tale in the trilogy. 'The Rats' is even better than I remembered ...
