Leben. Jones spielte als Kind Oboe, Saxophon, Posaune und Piano in der Schule. Im Alter von 16 Jahren spielte er für Satellite Records Baritonsaxophon.In dieser Zeit lernte er Steve Cropper kennen, der Bandmitglied bei Booker T. & the M.G.’s wurde, als diese sich 1962 formierten.
