In 1918, producer Robert Goldstein was convicted and imprisoned under the Espionage Act of 1917 for screening The Spirit of ’76, a movie about the American Revolution that authorities deemed subversively anti-British. Goldstein’s treatment exemplifies the curtailment of civil liberties in the United States during the war.
Spirit of ’76 Painting. One of America’s most iconic paintings can be seen in the Selectmen’s Room at Abbot Hall. The Spirit of ’76, originally titled Yankee Doodle, was painted by Archibald M. Willard, of Cleveland Ohio for exhibit in Philadelphia during the 1876 centennial celebrations.
The SPIRIT OF '76, depicting a flag bearer, drummer boy, and fifer marching across a battlefield during the American Revolution, is perhaps the most famous painting produced in Cleveland.
