The blended image (centre) was said by the Claimant's supporters to prove that Roger Tichborne (left, in 1853) and the Claimant (right, in 1874) were one and the same person. The Tichborne case was a legal cause célèbre that captivated Victorian England in the 1860s and 1870s.
1. Aug. 1998 · Based on a true story, set in the late 19th century: Lord Tichborne, the ninth richest nobleman in England, disappears after a South American shipwreck. Some years later his erudite Afro-English valet, Bogle, is sent to investigate rumors that Tichborne survived and settled in Australia.
When a rich British aristocrat disappears off the coast of Australia in 1866, his servant Bogle is dispatched. With Lord Tichborne nowhere to be found and realising that he will be refused a return home unless in the company of his master, Bogle desperately attempts to mould a vulgar peasant into a Tichborne double.
The Tichborne Claimant. Sent to 1870s Australia to retrieve a British heir, a family servant (John Kani) schemes with a pretender (Robert Pugh) to claim the inheritance.
