is a 1967 animated musical fantasy film made by Rankin/Bass Productions, written by Romeo Muller and directed by Jules Bass, based on Charles Perrault’s stories and nursery rhymes, and the first cel animated theatrical feature by Rankin/Bass. It tells the story of Mother Goose in an enchanted land featuring characters from famous Mother Goose rhyme...

Mother Goose’s sister, who lives beyond the moon, has a bad head cold and Mother Goose must leave Mother Goose Land to care for her. She bids farewell to Jack Horner, Jack & Jill, Simple Simon, Peter Piper and the rest of her fairytale friends, who are all worried something terrible will occur with Mother Goose gone.

Their premonition proves to be true. Meanwhile, Count Warptwist, the crooked man who has just come to live in the kingdom, and his army of Crooked Knights are up to no good. With Mother Goose out of the way, they plan to take over the land. As King Cole’s daughter, Princess Harmony, awaits her true love, the clumsy, yet good-natured Prince Robin, Robin is captured by Warptwist’s Knights. Warptwist, propping his unconscious body up with a stick and perfectly mimicking the Prince’s voice, asks Harmony to come out onto the balcony. She does, but then is immediately captured by the Knights. With Harmony in his clutches, Warptwist, his bumbling squire Zigzag, and the Crooked Knights invade King Cole’s castle. The Count warns Cole that if he doesn’t abide by his wishes, terrible things will befall his daughter. Fearing for Harmony’s safety, Cole agrees and does what Warptwist asks.

Throughout the land, by order of Count Warptwist, citizens are taken prisoner by the Knights to work in the Royal Diamond and Gold Mines, including the parents of Jack Horner. Jack attempts to stop them, but they rudely shove him aside, then cruelly burn his house. Luckily, Jack’s kind-hearted friend, Humpty Dumpty, decides that Jack can live with Mrs. Hubbard, the woman who lives in a shoe, who out of the kindness of her heart has taken in all the children whose parents were captured by Warptwist and the knights. However, Jack instead decides to take action and find Mother Goose, asking her to return in order to stop Warptwist. Despite his initial criticism about the matter, he is accompanied by Mary Contrary (and her little lamb).

Due to Warptwist making all roads so twisted that no one can find their way anywhere, the three decide to cut out across the field and come to a rough and dangerous-looking river. They ask Old Georgie Porgy if he’ll take them across, but he refuses. When it looks as though they’ll soon be captured by the Crooked Knights, the Butcher, Baker, and Candlestick Maker, sent by Mother Goose, arrive in a tub and help the trio escape.

Meanwhile, Harmony and Robin are locked up in Warptwist’s dungeon. The Count suggests that Harmony marry him, but she strongly refuses. While this is going on, Jack, Mary and the lamb hide out in a pumpkin patch from Warptwist’s Knights and Goosey Gander, the Count’s fearsome pet bird. There, they’re greeted by friendly girl named Patricia, wife of Peter Pumpkin-Eater, stuck inside one of the pumpkins by her husband (after he was turned into a Crooked Knight by Warptwist). They help her out and she takes them back to her house for supper. There, she tells of the evil magic Warptwist uses to bring common household objects to life in order to spy on others and report back to him. As she does, she doesn’t realize the dish and spoon (brought to life by the Count earlier that day) are listening to them, especially when she mentions the Purple Cow, who can jump over the moon. Realizing that the Cow may be their only chance to reach Mother Goose in time, they all head out, with no one noticing the dish and spoon secretly following them.

They try to convince the Cow to jump, but she refuses, as she is not in the mood to do so. She says the one thing that will put her in the mood is music. Patricia calls on the Cat with the Fiddle, who agrees to fiddle for the Cow, especially after being mocked by the Little Dog. As they all dance to a lively tune, eventually Patricia hops on the Cow’s back and they both fly up to the moon. The next day, as Warptwist tries to convince King Cole to sign a new proclamation giving everything in the kingdom to him, the dish and spoon report to the Count what has been going on, and he sends the Knights out to capture the children. Jack and the lamb manage to escape them by falling over a cliff, but Mary is not so lucky and is taken by the Knights. She is locked in the deepest cell in Warptwist’s dungeon, with Brutus, a ferocious sentient candlestick, acting as her jailer.
