    is the loose Russian adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by Alexander Volkov first published in 1939. It is the first entry in the Magic Land series, and was followed by Urfin Jus and his Wooden Soldiers 24 years later.

    It coincidently came out the same month as The Wizard of Oz (1939 film) was released in the United States since the Children’s State Publishing House of the Soviet Union set that exact September for publication when they approved the book on 7 June 1938.
