"Thou shalt not die" was a poem written by Akiko Yosano and is her most famous work. The poem was written for her younger brother who was fighting in the Russian-Japanese war. It was an extremely controversial piece that attacked the notions of Bushido that led men to die in the name of the Emperor and asked why he deserved their sacrifice.
Yosano's poem Kimi Shinitamou koto nakare (君死にたもうこと勿れ, Thou Shalt Not Die), addressed to her younger brother, was published in Myōjō during the height of the Russo-Japanese War and was extremely controversial.
