According to Mel Tormé, the song was actually written on a blistering hot Summer day. Robert Wells had supposedly been jotting down any cold, wintery thoughts and phrases purely to distract himself from the sweltering temperature. Tormé stumbled upon Wells’s notes and began setting them to music.
