Because she was under contract to Columbia, she used the pseudonym "Lady Day". The song reached number 23 on the pop charts and number one on the R&B charts, then called the Harlem Hit Parade.

However, John Coltrane apparently initially refused to go because he wanted a thousand dollars a week. Granz had to step in to supplement what Davis was paying him.
