Fontella Marie Bass (/ b æ s /; July 3, 1940 – December 26, 2012) was an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter best known for her number-one R&B hit "Rescue Me" in 1965. She has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice.

The R&B spirit has remained with Bass. It's most apparent, ironically, on the tracks that she doesn't lead, such as "Special Lady" sung by Peaston and "Waiting" sung by Mitchell.
