At the University of Padua, he studied under Gregorio Ricci Curbastro, with whom he later collaborated in founding the absolute differential calculus (now known as tensor analysis).

Levi-Civita came from a rigorous and creative school of mathematical physicists and was a pupil of Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro.

Levi-Civita, Sohn eines Juristen und späteren Senators, begann nach guter Schulbildung 1890 ein Mathematikstudium an der Universität seiner Geburtsstadt und hörte u. a. bei G. Veronese (1854–1917) und G. Ricci Curbastro (1853–1925).
