Overview. While in San Francisco for the promotion of her last film in October 1967, Agnès Varda, tipped by her friend Tom Luddy, gets to know a relative she had never heard of before, Jean Varda, nicknamed "Yanco". This hitherto unknown uncle lives on a boat in Sausalito, is a painter, has adopted a hippie lifestyle and loves life.
Amid the floating, make-shift homes of Sausalito, San Francisco’s “aquatic suburbia,” Agnès Varda locates a long-lost uncle, and a whole new way of life comes tumbling forth. An alternative look at the Bay Area’s infamous Summer of Love, Varda’s short glimmers with psychedelic and utopian promise.
"Oncle Yanco" ("Uncle Yanco" in English) is a short documentary that the cineaste made during a brief stay in California. The focus is a relative of hers from Greece, now living a hippie lifestyle in Sausalito and respected by his community.
