The University of Cape Town (UCT) (Afrikaans: Universiteit van Kaapstad, Xhosa: iYunivesithi yaseKapa) is a public research university in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 1829 as the South African College , it was granted full university status in 1918, making it the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest university in Sub-Saharan Africa in continuous operation.
Die Universität von Kapstadt ist nicht nur die älteste Uni im ganzen Land, sondern gilt laut den World University Rankings 2013-2014 der Times Higher Education auch als beste Universität Afrikas.
Die University of Cape Town hat ihren Sitz in einem imposanten Hauptgebäude am Fuße des Tafelbergs. Die Universität beherbergt eine der ersten Kunstfakultäten des Landes und blickt auf eine lange liberal geprägte Vergangenheit zurück. Jährlich studieren hier rund 15000 Studenten.
