The town of St Andrews is small – just 17,000 permanent residents live among protected conservation areas, meaning university staff along with 7,500 students makes up about half its population. The university itself refers to the ‘thee people rule’. Supposedly a student walking down the street in St Andrews is bound to know at least one in every three people they pass.

9. Sept. 2023 · It is the second year in succession that St Andrews has led the Guardian ranking, which assesses the performance and strengths of all 130 UK universities. St Andrews made history in 2019 when it became the first UK university to break the longstanding Oxbridge duopoly at the top of UK university league tables, unseating Oxford to take second place.
24. Sept. 2022 · The University of St Andrews is the top university in the UK, moving ahead of Oxford and Cambridge, in the Guardian University Guide 2023 published today (Saturday 24 September). It is the second time in two years that Scotland’s oldest university has come ahead of its larger Oxbridge rivals to top a leading university league table.
