Nachdem Bandy 1962 die Schule abgeschlossen hatte, widmete er sich stärker der Musik und gründete seine erste Band, die er Moe and the Mavericks nannte. Obwohl die Band in vielen Clubs und Honky-Tonks im Großraum San Antonio auftrat, musste Bandy sich noch viele Jahre als Metallarbeiter Geld dazuverdienen. 1964 erhielt er einen Plattenvertrag von Satin Records über eine einzige Schallplatte.
