Vor 5 Tagen · The viol (also called viola da gamba) is any one of a family of bowed, fretted stringed musical instruments developed in the 1400s and used primarily in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The family is related to and descends primarily from the Spanish vihuela (a guitar-like plucked string instrument).
That’s kind of a hard stance to take when oud, lute, and vihuela tablature go back to at least the 15th century. There have been various evolutions since, but tablature is the foundation of earlier written music for stringed instruments. There’s literally centuries of music for our instrument’s family (and relatives) written in tablature.
