Voodoo Soup was Douglas' attempt at presenting Hendrix's planned fourth studio album. The first attempt in 1971, The Cry of Love, produced by drummer Mitch Mitchell and Eddie Kramer (with a credit to Hendrix), was then out of print (last released on CD in 1992; re-released in 2014).

John Graham "Mitch" Mitchell (9 July 1946 – 12 November 2008) [1] [2] was an English drummer and child actor, who was best known for his work in the Jimi Hendrix Experience for which he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. [3] He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2009. [4]
"Voodoo Chile" was recorded at the Record Plant in New York City, after a late night jam session with Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, organist Steve Winwood, and bassist Jack Casady. The song became the basis for "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", recorded by the Experience the next day and one of Hendrix's best-known songs.

Plus, New Rising Sun is an edit of something much longer (which we've now heard elsewhere without those edits). Angel also had 2 complete drum tracks playing at the same time on Cry Of Love. On Voodoo Soup, only one of them is present. What Douglas did ...

“Voodoo Soup” falls in the latter category; although a compilation at 1st sight, and though Mitch Mitchell and Eddie Kramer had done a job as apparently perfect as possible , in guessing what Jimi would have liked to include in the album he was working at when he died, “Voodoo Soup” can also be seen as an alternative The Cry of Love.
