Der Physiker Walther Bothe erhielt 1954 den Nobelpreis für Physik. Es war der erste Nobelpreis für die junge MPG. Bothe war 1934 ans Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für medizinische Forschung nach Heidelberg gekommen und hatte dort wichtige Arbeiten zur Kernphysik und zur Radioaktivität geleistet.
