Changing some personnel while recording The Man with the Horn, he formed a live band consisting of Mike Stern on guitar (replacing Barry Finnerty), Al Foster on drums, Mino Cinelu on percussion (he had replaced Sammy Figueroa), Bill Evans on soprano, and Marcus Miller on bass.

Bill Evans plays soprano sax on most of the tracks, but on Kix, he picked up his tenor sax and seeing Miles’ smile of approval, played his first instrument. The inside cover of the album (and CD booklet) includes a photo of Miles, Marcus Miller, Bill Evans and part of Mike Stern.

At the age of 22, he joined Miles Davis and was part of his comeback in the early to mid–1980s. Notable albums recorded with Davis include The Man With The Horn, We Want Miles, Star People, and Decoy. Evans is unrelated to pianist Bill Evans (1929–1980), who played with Davis in the 1950s.
