Wilhelm Burgdorf was born in Fürstenwalde, Germany. He joined the German Army as an officer cadet as WW1 began, and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1915. During the inter-war years, he remained in the German Army. In 1935, at the rank of major, he was appointed an instructor at the military academy in Dresden, Germany.
