William Inge was an American playwright and screenwriter who wrote four Broadway plays: "Come Back Little Sheba", "Picnic", "Bus Stop" and "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs". He won an Oscar for his screenplay of "Splendor in the Grass" in 1961. He also wrote and starred in some of his own plays, such as "Picnic" and "Bus Stop". He died by suicide in 1973.
