  1. Wolfgang Melz (b. 1938) is a German-American bassist and composer, currently based in Houston, Texas. He was born in Landsberg, Germany, and during World War II his family fled to Wiesbaden, in the American occupied zone. There Wolfgang built his first instrument, a banjo, and started playing old dixieland tunes for food near the train station.

  2. Sadly, the German émigré Melz, who was a tremendous asset to Szabo’s group, remains to this day a vastly underrated musician and composer. Melz contributed a good number of songs to Szabo’s band book during the early seventies and the guitarist gave over the majority of his 1973 album, Rambler , to the bassist’s intriguing compositions.
