Staatsexamen arbeitete Adenauer als Assessor bei der Staatsanwaltschaft in Köln, ab 1903 bei Rechtsanwalt Hermann Kausen (Vorsitzender der Kölner Zentrumsfraktion), ab 1905 als Hilfsrichter beim Landgericht. 1904 war er durch Heirat mit Emma Weyer (1880–1916) mit dem Kölner Patriziat in Verbindung getreten.
