By Car: You don’t necessarily need a car once you’re on the island, as the main area of Bar Harbor is walkable and there is a free shuttle that circles through Acadia.   4. Bar Harbor is known as the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of America’s favorite parks, and is situated on Mount Desert Island right on the gorgeous Frenchman’s Bay. Here you will find Cadillac Mountain *, the highest point on the eastern seaboard, where you can often see the country’s first sunrise.

  5. The major portion of the park (30,500 acres) is located on Mount Desert Island with 10,156 acres within Bar Harbors boundary lines. Resource-based recreational activities include camping, hiking, horseback and carriage riding, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, and sightseeing.
