The arms of France were adopted by the Capetian kings only in the twelfth century. Consequently, the cadet branches that had branched off in earlier periods (Burgundy, Vermandois, Dreux and Courtenay) bore entirely different arms.

Louis was born on Oct. 4, 1289 in Paris. His mother was Joan of Navarre. When his mother died, in 1305, Louis became King of Navarre.
