Celestial mechanics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the motions of objects in outer space. Historically, celestial mechanics applies principles of physics ( classical mechanics ) to astronomical objects, such as stars and planets , to produce ephemeris data.

Pierre-Simon de Laplace (1749 - 1827) produced his monumental work: Mécanique Céleste in five volumes during the years 1799 to 1825.
His work in celestial mechanics and probability theory paved the way for many future developments in mathematics and physics. Laplace’s equations, which describe the dynamics of a wide range of physical systems, are still used today in fields such as fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics.
