Soon, performers such as Ray Charles started copping Brown’s mix of jazz and blues. “I loved and imitated Nat Cole and Charles Brown,” Charles wrote in his 1979 autobiography, Brother Ray.
Brown was born in Texas City, Texas, on Sept. 13, 1921, worked as a teacher and chemist before settling on a career in music after moving to Los Angeles. His father was an itinerant cotton picker, and after his mother died when Charles was six months old, his maternal grandmother raised him. She had him playing church music on the piano at the age of four.
