  6. 8. Okt. 2005 · Charlie Shavers was one of the great trumpeters to emerge during the swing era, a virtuoso with an open-minded and extroverted style along with a strong sense of humor. He originally played piano and banjo before switching to trumpet, and he developed very quickly.

  7. Charlie Shavers (1920–71) A native of New York, Shavers played piano and banjo before mastering the trumpet. In 1936 he joined John Kirby’s new Sextet: he was only 16 and lied about his birthdate, giving it as 1917, to avoid child labour regulations. Many biographies still quote the wrong date.
