Clarence attended his adopted father's funeral, even recognized highly in the lead family limousine procession. Clarence (Hatfield) Armstrong lived a full life, dying at age 83, in August 1998, and endures in Armstrong's memoir as the happy athletic boy everyone called, much to Louis's pleasure, "Little Louis Armstrong."

Clarence Armstrong was mentally disabled as a result of a head injury at an early age, and Armstrong spent the rest of his life taking care of him.
