A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that warms and begins to release gases when passing close to the Sun, a process called outgassing. This produces an extended, gravitationally unbound atmosphere or coma surrounding the nucleus, and sometimes a tail of gas and dust gas blown out from the coma.
Comets are frozen leftovers from the formation of the solar system composed of dust, rock, and ices. They range from a few miles to tens of miles wide, but as they orbit closer to the Sun, they heat up and spew gases and dust into a glowing head that can be larger than a planet.

Der Komet Halley, auch Halleyscher Komet und offiziell 1P/Halley genannt, zählt seit langem zu den bekanntesten Kometen. Er ist sehr lichtstark und kehrt im Mittel alle 75,3 Jahre wieder. Zuletzt kam er 1986 in Erdnähe; seine nächste Wiederkehr wurde für das Jahr 2061 berechnet.
September 2021 mit Hilfe des Pan-STARRS 2 Teleskop auf dem Haleakala in Hawaii als 20 Größenklassen helles Objekt entdeckt. Der Komet durchlief am 14. Februar 2024, mit einem Abstand von 197,5 Millionen Kilometer, sein Perihel und erreichte Ende Februar 2024 eine scheinbare Helligkeit von ungefähr 9,5 Größenklassen.
