It contains a number of singles, B-sides , and previously released album tracks dating back to 1965, including one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit " (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay ".

It was released on Stax Records ' Volt label in 1968, [4] becoming the first posthumous #1 single in the US. [5] . It reached #3 on the UK Singles Chart . Redding started writing the lyrics in August, 1967 while staying on a rented houseboat in Sausalito, California.
