At the time of Barbara’s birth, Emanuel Streisand (who held a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education and a Master of Science degree in Education from the City College of New York) was the school superintendent at the Elmira Reformatory, where he taught English to prisoners.
Barbara Joan Streisand was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family, the daughter of Emmanuel and Diana (née Rosen) Streisand, both of Austrian descent. She is the second of two children fathered by Emmanuel (the elder child is Sheldon), who was a respected high school teacher.
