His first musical influence was the yodeling of Jimmie Rodgers. He became one of the earliest exponents of honky-tonk with hits such as “I’m Walking the Floor over You” (1941).

A 1939 tonsillectomy in San Angelo lowered his voice and effectively eliminated the Rodgers yodel and, hence, the Rodgers song repertoire.
