None of the political groups in the European Parliament has a majority, so groups have to seek support from other groups to make sure their amendments are adopted. The position adopted by the political groups is arrived at by discussion within the group. No MEP can be forced to vote in a particular way.
Parliament is able to support the work of its 705 MEPs (720 MEPs after 2024 European Elections) and operate in 24 different languages thanks to its annual budget. This represents one fifth of all EU institutions’ total administrative expenditure and only 1.2% of the EU’s general budget. Member States receive the vast majority of EU funding.
