Franz Theodor Kugler (19 January 1808, Stettin – 18 March 1858, Berlin) was an art historian and cultural administrator for the Prussian state. He was the father of historian Bernhard von Kugler (1837-1898).

Kugler divided world art history into four periods, Pre-Hellenic, Classical (Greek and Roman antiquity), “Romantic” (Medieval and the rise of Islam) and Modern (from the Renaissance to the 19th century).

The finds on the Swabian Alb turn Kugler’s magnum opus into what it equally declamatorily and futilely claimed to be: a handbook of art history.
His work in art history is examined by the art historians Heinrich Dilly, Johannes Rößler, Hubert Locher, and Henrik Karge, with an additional essay contributed by the interdisciplinary scholar Michèle Espagne.
