George Henry Dern (September 8, 1872 – August 27, 1936) was an American politician, mining man, and businessman. He co-invented the Holt–Dern ore roasting process and was United States Secretary of War from 1933 to his death in 1936.
George Henry Dern was born September 8, 1872, in Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska for three years before leaving to join his family in Utah. He began his career as a clerk in the Mercury Gold Mining and Milling Company, becoming general manager in 1900.
George Henry Dern was an American politician, mining man, and businessman. He co-invented the Holt–Dern ore roasting process and was United States Secretary of War from 1933 to his death in 1936. He also served as the sixth governor of Utah for eight years, from 1925 to 1933.
His paternal grandfather, George Dern, was a Utah governor and Secretary of War (he was serving in the latter position during the time of Bruce's birth). Dern's maternal grandfather was a Vice President of the Carson, Pirie and Scott stores, which were established by his own father, Scottish-born businessman Andrew MacLeish.
