Lewis verwandte den Begriff im Rahmen eines von ihm vorgeschlagenen Modells der Wechselwirkung von Atomen mit Licht. Dieses Modell sah unter anderem fälschlich eine Erhaltung der Photonenzahl vor und wurde allgemein nicht anerkannt.
